INEC Extends Voter Registration Deadline, Launches Online Self-Service Platform for First-Time Voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks, giving eligible Nigerians more time to register before the revised deadline of July 24, 2026. The electoral body also announced the introduction of an online self-service registration platform for first-time voters, marking a significant step in its efforts to modernize Nigeria's voter registration process.

The decision follows a review of the ongoing registration exercise and consultations with INEC's state offices, political parties, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. According to the commission, the extension is intended to ensure that more eligible citizens have the opportunity to be included in the national register of voters ahead of future elections.

As part of the new initiative, INEC announced that eligible first-time voters will be able to begin and complete their registration process through a dedicated online self-service platform starting July 8, 2026.

The platform is designed to simplify voter registration by allowing applicants to submit their information and complete the required biometric capture using their personal devices. The system also incorporates identity verification, biometric validation, and other integrity measures aimed at maintaining the credibility of Nigeria's voter register. 

The commission said the online option reflects its commitment to using technology to improve access to electoral services while reducing the burden on physical registration centres.

Originally scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, the Continuous Voter Registration exercise will now remain open until Friday, July 24, 2026.

INEC explained that the extension was granted after receiving widespread feedback from stakeholders who requested additional time for citizens who had not yet registered.

The commission believes the additional two weeks will help increase voter participation by ensuring that eligible Nigerians are not excluded simply because they were unable to complete the registration process within the original timeframe.

Voter registration is one of the most important steps in any democratic process. Without being registered, eligible citizens cannot participate in elections or influence decisions that affect their communities and the nation.

The extension is expected to benefit thousands of Nigerians, particularly young people who have recently turned 18, citizens registering for the first time, and those who may have experienced difficulties accessing registration centres during the initial exercise.

The programme also allows already registered voters to update personal information, transfer their registration to another polling unit, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and correct errors in their records.
