Oyo Schools to Resume July 6 as Government Revises Academic Calendar After NUT Strike

The Oyo State Government has announced that public primary and secondary schools across the state will resume academic activities on Monday, July 6, 2026, following the suspension of the month-long strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers. 

The announcement was co

ntained in a circular issued by the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, which also unveiled a revised academic calendar for the 2025/2026 school session. The circular, signed by the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Mrs. B. T. Oyinloye, stated that the current academic term will run for six weeks and end on Friday, August 14, 2026. 

According to the revised schedule, students and teachers will proceed on a four-week holiday from August 17 to September 11, 2026, while the 2026/2027 first term is scheduled to commence on Monday, September 14, 2026. 

The adjustment became necessary after the industrial action by the NUT disrupted academic activities in public schools across the state. The strike was triggered by the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area, prompting the union to demand stronger security measures before returning to classrooms. 

With the suspension of the strike and the release of the updated academic calendar, the state government has urged all schools to strictly comply with the revised schedule to ensure the smooth completion of the academic session.
